Chapter 12
Sky
Our Bachelor has delivered me to Veraâs turf in Oregon. Sheâs wearing black jeans and boots, a long-sleeve turquoise shirt over another with lettering I canât quite read showing through. The double barrier isnât her normal flirty style. But then Iâm on her turf. I have no idea who she really is, but I hope to find out more about her today. I pick up my pace. âVera! Itâs good to see you.â
She glances at her boots briefly and then holds her hand out to me, her curly blonde hair bouncing about her shoulders as she hops. âWeâre going to have so much fun. Just wait and see.â
On the coast of Oregon, we could do numerous things. Hike, waterski, ocean and freshwater fish, horseback riding. The choices are unlimited. I inhale the fresh air, infused with pines, rhododendrons, and salty air. Her town of Florence reminds me how close I am to my brothers, not more than three hours south of here. It also reminds me that Iâm not the man she thought I was, and I need to address any concerns she has before I meet her parents. âYou want to go and talk first?â
She pulls me forward, toward a waiting red convertible.
Dade pumps his brows. Itâs completely unprofessional, as if heâs urging me to take the bait, the car, the catch that is Vera. Vera dashes into the driverâs side, and I wait until sheâs buckled to close her door. I stroll to the other side and slide into the passenger seat. âAre you showing me the sights of the Oregon Coast?â
She grips the wheel and tosses her head. âSnore. I have something so much better planned.â
The wind foils over the windshield as the luxury sedanâs engine purrs as we cruise Highway One.
I should be taking in the forest, the rolling sand dunes that peek from the ocean side of the highway every so often, but instead, I canât help but think how good Isla would look behind the wheel of a car like this. The wind making her fuchsia-tipped black hair sail behind her, sunglasses on, those fangs of hers ready to drink me dry.
I shake my head, forcing myself to once again address Vera about what happened in New York. âAbout Manhattan. Iâm sure you have questions.â
âHere we are!â She turns a hard right, hurling me against the door.
Before I can say another thing, sheâs punched from the car. âSurprise!â
Dade pulls alongside us next to a row of buildings, or more like hangars where sand buggies can be stored. It takes him no less than five minutes to set up and stage an interview with each of us.
âI want Sky to see my playful, tomboy side.â She bats her eyes at the camera. âI want him to really miss me when he leaves at the end of the day.â
Dade slides the camera my way, prompting me to respond to her.
âIâm sure I will. I love it here in Oregon so far and am looking forward to meeting your family.
